Labor Day Grill Safety Tips

|

Labor Day Weekend has become a time for celebration across Texas and the U.S. While it may be a three-day weekend filled with fun, events, and barbecues, it can also be one of the most dangerous times of year – with the number of preventable accidents, injuries, and deaths increasingly sharply. As such, anyone with plans to enjoy themselves during the holiday needs to make sure safety is always a priority.

At the Law Offices of Vic Feazell, P.C., our personal injury lawyers have worked with many victims across Waco, Austin, and the state of Texas who were harmed during the holidays. Often, these injuries resulted from preventable wrecks involving drunk drivingslip and fall accidentsdefective products, and accidents caused by driver distraction. During the summer months, including holidays like Labor Day, we also see preventable injuries caused by improper use of grills and barbecues.

As grilling and summer holidays go hand in hand, it is important to remember that grills and barbecues still pose risks, especially when they are used negligently. To help you brush up on a couple grilling safety tips, we’ve put together the following information:

  • Check your grill – Whether it has been a while since you last used your grill or not, you will want to give it a thorough once over before bringing it out for the holiday. Something as simple as a minor leak can lead to devastating consequences.
  • Use grills in a safe area – If you’re grilling at home, make sure it is being done outside away from structures and fire hazards. These include any decorations that may be set up nearby for the holiday. You will also want to make sure your grill is stable and on a flat surface.
  • Supervision – Keeping your eye on the grill is important to reducing risks of preventable injuries, especially if you have young children around. Never leave the grill unattended.
  • Be ready for fires – Be prepared for the unexpected and have a plan should flames get out of hand. If you don’t have a fire extinguisher handy, keep baking soda or a bucket of sand nearby. You never want to use water on a grease fire.

As personal injury lawyers, we know all too well that even when precautions are taken, accidents and injuries can still result when negligence is involved.
