The United States Department of Transportation has started its annual “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” initiative aimed at reducing drunk driving accidents and raising awareness of the serious risks that this dangerous behavior continues to pose in the United States. The initiative, which runs until September 2nd, involves the efforts of more than 10,000 police departments and law enforcement agencies across the country in cracking down on this dangerous behavior.
Additionally, the Department will also be running a national advertising campaign aimed at making the public aware of this increased police presence and warning of the dangers of driving drunk. This year, the focus of the campaign will be on those who are killed in drunk driving accidents who were not themselves driving drunk. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association’s data, 3,371 individuals were killed in these types of car accidents in 2011.
